Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture Therapy

Acupuncture therapy is one of the many healing methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into acupuncture points on the body to treat diseases and for therapeutic purposes.

The acupuncture points are the responsive points or sensitive points on the meridians (http://www.bodyfoodenergy.com/html/BodyEnergy)and other parts of the body. They are the special locations that energy is transmitted between the inside and outside of the body. These points can reflect diseases or unhealthy conditions by giving painful sensations when touched or pressed. These points are (but not limited to) where the therapists apply treatments.

Acupuncture therapy is more specifically refer to the use of needles, whereas acupuncture-point therapy or meridian therapy (Chinese Jingluo therapy) has a broader sense. The latter includes acupuncture therapy, acupressure therapy, moxibustion therapy, cupping therapy or any therapy methods that are based on the concept of clearing the body’ energy pathways (meridians or Jingluos) and balancing body’s Yin/Yang energy therefore to normalize a person’s health condition.

Acupuncture therapy has a long history. It was used as a healing method long before the appearance of the master piece “The Yellow Emperor’s Classics of Internal Medicine” (see ‘ The History Of Chinese Medicine ’ section). It was said as early as during the new stone age, people started to use needles made of stones (by carving and polishing) to deal with some of the illnesses and discomforts in the body. There are needles made of stones, bones, bamboo, bronze, iron, silver, or gold. Nowadays, most of the acupuncture needles are made of metals such as silver, gold, stainless steel etc. The styles, shapes and length vary depend on the treatment purpose. There are regular needles, fire needles (the needle is burned in the fire before inserting into the patient’s body to intensify the treatment for some specific syndromes), triangle-edged needles (mostly used as a tool to release a small amount of blood to free up the blood circulation) etc.
